Description
Gamification often brings to mind points, badges, prizes, and leaderboards—but meaningful gamified learning can look very different. In this introductory session, we'll explore what gamification actually means, what separates purposeful gameful design from simply adding rewards to existing activities, and what educators identify as the features most likely to support student motivation, persistence, and confidence.
Drawing on research with educators and examples from educational escape games and other gamified learning experiences, we'll examine challenges, choice, feedback, collaboration, storytelling, and opportunities to safely fail and try again. You'll leave with a framework for recognizing where gameful design already exists in your teaching and identifying one opportunity to make a learning experience more engaging without turning your entire course into a game.
Learning objectives
By the end, participants could:
- Differentiate gamification, game-based learning, and pointsification.
- Identify gameful design features that can support motivation, mastery, and learner self-efficacy.
- Evaluate whether a gamified element is meaningfully connected to a learning outcome.
- Identify one existing course activity that could benefit from gameful redesign.
This is the first in a 3-part series.
